If you have recently received an SMS or email from the Income Tax Department asking you to review or revise your Income Tax Return (ITR), you are not alone.
For Assessment Year 2025–26, the Income Tax Department has initiated a large-scale, data-driven compliance initiative known as the NUDGE Campaign. While such messages can cause anxiety, it is important to understand what they actually mean, what they do not mean, and what actions (if any) you should take.
This article explains the NUDGE campaign in detail and guides you on how to respond calmly and correctly.
What Is the Income Tax NUDGE Campaign?
The NUDGE campaign stands for Non-Intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable taxpayers.
Under this initiative, the Income Tax Department uses advanced data analytics and its risk management framework to compare the information reported in your ITR with data available in government systems, including:
Form 26AS
AIS (Annual Information Statement)
TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary)
If a potential mismatch, ineligible deduction, or inconsistency is detected, the department sends a gentle reminder (nudge) through SMS or email asking the taxpayer to review their return.
Is This a Scrutiny Notice?
No. This is not a scrutiny notice.
This is a trust-first, voluntary compliance initiative. There is:
No assessment order
No penalty
No automatic demand
The department is simply giving taxpayers an opportunity to self-review and correct genuine mistakes, if any.
Why Is the Department Taking This So Seriously?
The scale of data matching under the NUDGE campaign is significant.
For AY 2025–26:
Over 15 lakh returns have already been revised
More than 21 lakh taxpayers have updated past returns
This has resulted in over ₹2,500 crore of additional tax collection
This clearly indicates that data matching is robust, and mismatches are being detected with increasing accuracy.
What Should You Do If You Receive a NUDGE Message?
If you receive such an SMS or email, do not panic — but do not ignore it either.
Step 1: Log in to the Income Tax Portal
Access your account on the official income tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Cross-Check Your Filed Return With Key Documents
Carefully verify your ITR against:
Form 26AS
AIS
TIS
Your actual documentary proofs for deductions and exemptions
This includes checking income figures, capital gains, interest income, and deductions claimed.
Use a Checklist Before Taking Any Decision
Before deciding whether to revise your return, it is essential to run through a systematic checklist.
A checklist helps you determine:
Whether the mismatch is real or only apparent
Whether the deduction or exemption claimed is eligible
Whether you have proper documentation to support your claim
To help taxpayers make this decision calmly and logically, we have prepared a free step-by-step checklist PDF.

Important Clarification: Do You Always Need to Revise?
No. Revising your return is not mandatory in every case.
If:
Your return is correctly filed
Your deductions are genuine and eligible
You possess valid documentary evidence
Then you do NOT need to revise your return, even if you received a NUDGE message. In such cases, no response is required.
When Should You Revise Your Return?
You should consider revising your return if:
There is a genuine mismatch
An ineligible deduction has been claimed
Income has been omitted or incorrectly reported
The last date to revise your ITR for AY 2025–26 is 31st December 2025.
Revising within the deadline allows you to correct errors voluntarily and avoid potential future consequences.
What Happens If You Don’t Revise by 31st December 2025?
If a genuine error exists and the return is not revised within the permitted time, the department may take further action based on available data.
The possible consequences and next steps after December 31, 2025, will be covered in detail in our next blog and reel.
Final Thoughts
The Income Tax NUDGE campaign is not meant to intimidate taxpayers. It is designed to encourage voluntary compliance using data transparency.
The key is simple:
Verify calmly
Decide logically
Act only if required
If you are unsure, do not make decisions based on fear. Use a checklist, review your documents, and seek professional guidance if needed.
Stay informed, stay compliant.
